English Champions

1st in Drumming

Best Bass Drummer

This was the performance of the season. Last weeks disappointment with the Corby results certainly seemed to work in our favour today. Everyone was up for the event and looking to put last weeks result well and truly in its place.

The MAP contest in the morning went reasonably well, although an early E by one piper and a little finger slip by another was a little concerning.

However we had plenty of time to really work on the chanter sound and managed to tighten things up further still.

Unfortunately we were only able to play eight pipers in the Grade IV contest proper - one voluntarily stood down and another had to be dropped about 10 minutes before we moved to the arena due to a reed which gave out on us at the last minute.

That said, the performance in the arena itself was solid with a pretty good sound, coupled with some good execution despite the fact that half-way through the performance the heavens opened up on us and the rain came hammering down. Everyone held their nerve and the expression in the playing was clear for all to hear.

Both the pipe and drum corps were very pleased with their performances and the results proved them right - 1st from both Piping Judges, 1st in Ensemble and 1st in Drumming (a clean sweep!)

What a way to end the season in England - five contests, three first places and two second places, a drum corps that has won every contest and two Best Bass Drummer/Section prizes.

The march down the street saw us produce an even better sound than during the contest (or was that just the euphoria of the result colouring our hearing!) and our 'trophy party' in front of the band was joined by the Chieftain of the Day. Hopefully we'll get some photographs from the event up on the webpage in the near future.

We couldn't have even dreamed of this level of success at the end of last season - but everything has clicked into place this year. All that's left now is the Cowal Championships in Scotland and we're ready to give a good account of ourselves there.
